Sex Toys As Contraband
So I found out today that there’s a ban on sex toy sales in Alabama. When I was told this, I really didn’t believe it at first. Seriously? There are places in the USA where you can’t buy sex toys? After a bit of surfing to confirm that this wasn’t just an urban legend, I found out its actually true!
“Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act of 1998 prohibits any person to knowingly distribute, possess with intent to distribute, or offer or agree to distribute any obscene material or any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs for anything of pecuniary value. First time offenders face a $10,000 fine and a year in prison, while repeat offenders can face up to ten years in prison. Exemptions exist for ‘bona fide medical, scientific, educational, legislative, judicial or law enforcement purposes’.”
I found that on Wikipedia, but it’s been confirmed in a few places elsewhere on the net. I think it’s beyond a joke, myself. The thing is, this isn’t one of those laws that’s just kind of forgotten about, like a lot of these other laws governing sex that are still on the books in some states. This one actually gets enforced. There was a guy who owned a sex toy shop tried to challenge this law in 2009, and he LOST. So technically, if you live in Alabama, you can buy sex toys out of state and have them sent directly you to, but you can’t actually purchase them in the state itself. What harm is a dildo going to do? I bet there are a lot more dangerous things sold in Alabama that actually hurt someone, as opposed to a rabbit vibrator that’s just going to get someone off.
